If you’ve invested in a professional brand photography session, you probably have a gallery full of beautiful images that you can use across your website, social media, email marketing, and other areas of your business.
But eventually, you may find yourself wondering:
“How often should I actually have brand photos taken?”
The answer isn’t necessarily once a year.
For some business owners, a brand photography session every 12 months makes sense. For others, their images can serve them beautifully for two or even three years.
The better question isn’t simply how long has it been since my last session?
It’s:
Do my current brand photos still accurately represent my business, my personality, and the people I’m serving today?
As a Virginia brand photographer, I believe your brand photography should evolve alongside you and your business—not simply be replaced because a certain amount of time has passed.
Here are some signs it might be time for an updated brand photography session.
This is one of the biggest reasons to schedule a new brand photography session.
Maybe you’ve:
If your current photos were created for the business you had three years ago, but your business looks completely different today, your imagery may no longer be telling the right story.
Your brand photos should reflect where your business is now—not where it used to be.

And yes, I mean this literally.
Maybe your hair has changed. Your style has evolved. You’ve gotten older. You’ve changed how you present yourself professionally.
That’s normal!
But if someone meets you through your website and then meets you in person, you want them to recognize you.
Your brand photography should feel current enough that your audience gets an authentic picture of who you are today.
This doesn’t mean you need a new photo every time you change your hairstyle.
But if you’re looking at your website and thinking, “Wow, I don’t even feel like that person anymore,” it may be time.

This is probably one of the easiest signs to recognize.
You open Canva to create a new piece of content and realize you’ve already used the same five photos approximately 47 times.
We’ve all been there. 😂
One of the biggest benefits of professional brand photography is having a library of images you can pull from consistently.
If you’re constantly recycling the same handful of photos, a new session can give you fresh content and help you show different sides of your business.
When you first started your business, your brand photography may have simply needed to establish who you are and what you do.
But as your business grows, your imagery can become more sophisticated.
You may now have:
Your photography can grow with you.
What worked when you were a brand-new entrepreneur may not accurately represent the level of business you’ve built today.

A brand photography session isn’t simply an opportunity to get a new profile picture.
You should ideally walk away with a variety of images that show:
You working.
You connecting with clients.
You interacting with your products or tools.
You smiling and looking approachable.
You demonstrating your expertise.
You simply being yourself.
These images give you much more flexibility when marketing your business.
If your current gallery is mostly traditional headshots, your next personal branding photography session could be an opportunity to create a much more comprehensive collection.
For many small business owners, once a year is a great starting point.
An annual brand photography session gives you the opportunity to:
But that doesn’t mean you have to schedule one every year.
If your business hasn’t changed significantly and you still love your images, you may be able to go longer.
On the other hand, if you’re going through a major transition, you may need a new session sooner.
Think in terms of seasons of your business—not an arbitrary calendar.
Here’s another option business owners sometimes overlook.
If you already have a strong collection of brand photos but you’ve recently launched something new or need a few specific images, you may only need a smaller refresh session rather than starting from scratch.
For example, you might need updated images for:
The goal isn’t to constantly spend money on photography.
The goal is to make sure your visual content is supporting the business you’re actually building.

One of the best ways to get more longevity from your images is to plan your brand photography session intentionally.
Before your session, think about:
What do I need these images to accomplish?
Where will you use them?
What stories do you want to tell?
What parts of your personality do you want your audience to see?
What services or offers need more visual representation?
When you answer those questions before you step in front of the camera, you’re much more likely to walk away with a gallery that continues serving your business long after the session is over.
As a Virginia brand photographer, I help entrepreneurs create intentional, personality-filled images that give them more than just another headshot.
Before your session, we’ll work together through a pre-shoot questionnaire and consultation call to understand your business, your goals, your ideal client, and exactly how you want to use your images.
Because your brand photography should reflect who you are and where your business is going.
If you’re looking at your current photos and thinking, “These just don’t feel like me anymore,” it might be time for a refresh.
