There’s something so special about an engagement session when you’re not only documenting a couple’s love story, but also getting to know the two people behind it. Sarah and Ian’s summer engagement session at Morven Park was one of those evenings that felt effortless from beginning to end.
With their wedding coming up next April at Lansdowne Resort, this session was the perfect opportunity to slow down, explore, and celebrate this season of their relationship before the excitement of wedding planning takes over.
Sarah had apparently made one thing very clear to Ian: he needed to propose before her 30th birthday. 😂
And he listened.
Ian proposed just two days before Sarah turned 30, making her birthday season even more memorable. I think it’s safe to say he understood the assignment!
Now, with their wedding day on the horizon, their engagement session was another beautiful milestone to document along the way.
Morven Park was the perfect setting for their Northern Virginia engagement photos. We spent the evening wandering through the gardens, taking our time, finding beautiful pockets of light, and allowing plenty of space for the two of them to simply enjoy being together.
And honestly, one of my favorite parts of engagement sessions is getting to know my couples outside of the wedding day.
Sarah and Ian were so much fun to work with. As we explored the gardens together, we talked, laughed, and got more comfortable in front of the camera. By the end of the evening, it felt less like a photoshoot and more like spending an evening with friends.
That is exactly what I hope an engagement session feels like.
And can we talk about Sarah’s dress?
Her classic white engagement dress was absolutely stunning. It was elegant without feeling overly formal, and the way it flowed as she moved through the gardens photographed beautifully.
There was something so timeless about the entire look—soft summer light, lush gardens, and a beautiful white dress that moved effortlessly with her.
It’s a perfect example of why I always encourage my couples to choose something that feels like them. When you feel confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing, it comes through in your images.
One of the sweetest parts of photographing engagement sessions is knowing that these images are just the beginning.
Next April, I’ll be photographing Sarah and Ian again as they celebrate their wedding at Lansdowne Resort. After spending this evening getting to know them, I already know their wedding day is going to be something special.
Their engagement session gave us a chance to get comfortable together, but more importantly, it gave us the opportunity to document this little chapter of their story before they officially become husband and wife.
And I can’t wait to see where the rest of their story takes them.
Your engagement photos should feel like more than a collection of pretty pictures. They should feel like you—your relationship, your personalities, and the season of life you’re currently in.
Whether you’re dreaming of engagement photos at Morven Park, exploring the gardens of a historic Virginia estate, or simply want an evening that feels relaxed and genuine, I’d love to help you plan a session that feels intentional and completely your own.
