SAs a Northern Virginia wedding photographer, I know just how important it is to include a 2nd photographer in your wedding collection. For this reason, I always include a 2nd photographer with my wedding collections. The only exception would be for much smaller weddings, such as an elopement where not as much coverage is needed.
Today on the blog I will be discussing the top 5 reasons why you need a 2nd photographer. Notice I did not say “want”, but instead I said “need.” Besides having the benefits of a 2nd photographer, it can also add as a security to your photography investment. Keep reading!
1)More Coverage, More Photos!
This is one of the main benefits of having a 2nd photographer. When you include a 2nd photographer you receive more coverage, which results in more photos! While I am busy directing and posing, my 2nd photographer can continue shooting. This always allows for some fun & candid behind the scenes shots. It also allows my 2nd photographer to capture different angles than what I am capturing (which is especially important for a First Look!). I always joke with my 2nd photographer that sometimes I like their photos better, because they always end up being able to capture those fun candid shots! These are especially fun for the wedding party photos 😉
2) Being Present
When a 2nd photographer is present, it prevents me from being pulled in two different directions. Typically on a wedding day, I will assign my 2nd photographer to the groom and groomsmen. This allows me the time to focus on the bride, and the bride alone. Here are some more examples: During the ceremony, it requires less movement and distraction on my part since my 2nd photographer is covering a different angle. While I am capturing family formals, I can have my 2nd photographer capturing cocktail hour until I am ready for portrait time. If there is ever a time I need to be in two places at once, I can send my 2nd photographer to cover one area. It’s less stress on the primary photographer, but it also ensures that you get every aspect of your day covered! As well as the undivided attention that you deserve and need.
3)Don’t Miss the Shot
Let’s face it, we are all human. Mistakes are going to be made, whether it’s the cause of ourselves or someone else. Having a 2nd photographer is almost like having insurance for your photography investment, lol. Envision that there is a key event taking place, such as the first kiss as husband and wife. Or maybe it’s when the groom dips the bride during the first dance. These are very special moments that need to be captured! What if a guest jumps in my way last minute (see my post on unplugged weddings, here!) ? What if I happen to have a camera malfunction right as my finger hits the shutter (and don’t worry, I have back up equipment!)? I will always have my 2nd shooter position themselves at an angle that is completely opposite of me. This way if a guest wrecks my shot, they are able to capture it since I wasn’t able to.
4)More Access to Equipment
As a Northern Virginia Wedding photographer, I always bring plenty of equipment with me. This also includes a back up camera, extra batteries, lenses, etc. My 2nd photographer also comes just as equipped. The nice thing about including a 2nd photographer is having the security of knowing if your equipment malfunctions, or if your batteries die, your 2nd photographer has some they can loan you. Honestly this rarely happens because I do bring more than I need, but it’s always a possibility. This could also be true of external flash malfunctions, memory card malfunctions, etc. Unfortunately electronics can be quirky sometimes. With a 2nd photographer, you have more access to equipment if need be.
5)Emergency Situations
We all know how terrible Northern Virginia traffic can be, lol. I will always arrive at least 15-30 minutes early, but sometimes travel isn’t so kind to us. We could be stuck in traffic, experience car trouble, or run late due to an emergency situation. Whatever the case may be, I know I have a 2nd photographer who can be there to cover for me until I arrive. This way your day does not get delayed, and moments will not be missed. My 2nd photographer is well experienced, & well aware of the structure & timeline before they arrive.
