There’s something extra special about the first session of a new year—and Kara & Cody’s Shenandoah Valley engagement session at Seven Bends State Park did not disappoint. This marked my very first engagement session of 2026, and honestly… it felt like the sweetest way to kick things off.
Even though we’re still in that in-between season where the landscape hasn’t quite come back to life yet (you know—the “everything is technically still dead” phase), you would never know it from their Shenandoah Valley engagement photos. We were gifted the most beautiful temperatures and the dreamiest golden light, which wrapped around them in the softest, most romantic way. It was one of those evenings that just felt easy.
Kara and Cody’s story started in a place most people wouldn’t expect to find something so meaningful—work. What began as shared space and everyday interactions slowly grew into something deeper, more intentional, and clearly something that was meant to last.
There’s always something so grounding about couples who start this way. It’s real, it’s natural, and it’s built on truly knowing each other in everyday life—not just the highlight reel.
One of my favorite parts of their story? The proposal.
Cody proposed to Kara on a drawstring bridge—yes, a drawstring bridge—which already feels like something out of a movie. But what made this session even more special is how unintentionally full-circle everything became.
As we explored Seven Bends State Park, we made our way to one of the most iconic spots in the area: the epic drawstring bridge overlooking the Shenandoah River. And of course… that’s exactly where we ended their session.
It couldn’t have been more perfect.
There was something so meaningful about closing their engagement session in a place that echoed such an important moment in their story. The way the light hit the water, the quiet movement of the river below, and the stillness of the evening—it all came together in a way that felt intentional, even if it wasn’t planned that way from the beginning.
If you’ve ever worried about scheduling photos before everything turns green again, let Kara & Cody’s session be your reminder: you don’t need lush landscapes to create something beautiful.
The golden light showed up. The connection showed up. And that’s what truly matters.
Sometimes the simplicity of a more neutral, quiet landscape actually allows the people to shine even more—and that was absolutely the case here.
Kara & Cody, I don’t think I could have dreamed up a better couple to start the year with. Your story, your ease with each other, and the way you just fit made this session such a joy to photograph.
If this session is any indication of what 2026 has in store, it’s going to be a beautiful year.

Let this be your reminder: the best locations aren’t just pretty—they’re personal.
